Unicorn facts
The unicorn is a legendary animal that looks like a horse or a goat with a single horn on its forehead. Unicorns are thought to be good and pure creatures with magical powers. They are strong, often white in color, and difficult to catch.
The unicorn appears in the art of ancient Mesopotamia. Ancient Indian and Chinese myths also told of unicorns. Chinese myth claims that seeing a unicorn is a good omen. Stories and art about the creature were popular in the Middle Ages in Europe. In Europe the unicorn is a symbol of love and purity.
An ancient Greek historian named Ctesias wrote one of the first reports of the unicorn in about 400 bc. He said that the unicorn’s horn had many powers. Drinking from the horn would protect the drinker from poison, stomachaches, and other health problems. Ctesias probably was describing the Indian rhinoceros—a real animal with a single horn that Europeans had never seen. In fact, cups made of rhinoceros horn were prized during the Middle Ages because people believed that they came from unicorns.
